4 weeks before
- Decide your moving date and book your movers early, especially near the New Year, school holidays or month-end.
- Walk through each room and decide what to keep, sell, donate or throw away.
- Measure large furniture and the doors, stairs and lifts at your new home.
- Ask your landlord or building management about move-in rules and lift bookings.
2 weeks before
- Start packing items you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, decorations.
- Arrange electricity, water, internet and gas transfers or new connections for the new address.
- Tell your bank, employer, children’s school and insurance company about your new address.
- Book storage if your new home will not be ready on moving day.
1 week before
- Pack room by room and label every box with the room name and contents.
- Defrost and clean the fridge 24 hours before the move.
- Keep documents, jewellery, cash and medicines with you, not in the lorry.
- Confirm the time, address and contact numbers with your movers.
Moving day
- Pack a first-night bag: clothes, toiletries, chargers, kettle, tea and snacks.
- Walk through the house with the crew supervisor before loading.
- Check every room, cupboard and the roof storage before the lorry leaves.
- At the new home, tell the crew where each piece of furniture goes.
After the move
- Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.
- Check furniture after re-assembly and report any problem immediately.
- Register with nearby services: clinic, pharmacy, schools and the Grama Niladhari if needed.
- Recycle or give away the empty boxes, or ask us to take them.
